Kenneth E. Mantai, Ph.D., has taught biology for more than 33 years, taking groups of students to the tropics (Trinidad, Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama) for two decades. He and his students, undergraduate and graduate, have studied sea turtles, sphinx months and aquatic plants.
He earned his Ph.D. is in plant physiology and biochemistry from Oregon State University. He holds the Distinguished Teaching Professor rank given by SUNY. Although recently retired from fulltime teaching in the SUNY Fredonia biology department, he continues to actively recruit and teach students and teachers for his unique educational trips to Costa Rica.
Dr. Mantai's research interests have evolved from photosynthesis to aquatic plants to Green Sea Turtles. His students have gone on to become teachers, doctors, researchers, and scholars, and many continue to correspond with him.
He is a dedicated attendee at alumni reunions, and despite his retirement can be found on campus nearly every day, especially in the Dods Hall racquetball courts.
